Pregnancy and Oral Health<\/span><\/h2>\n

Hormone fluctuations during pregnancy can have a serious effect on your periodontal health during pregnancy. It is not uncommon for women to experience what we call \u201cpregnancy gingivitis,\u201d which is the minor inflammation and redness of the gums. While this condition is usually mild and temporary, it can worsen to periodontal (gum) disease — which can have an impact the growing baby as well. Pregnant women who have gum disease are more likely to go into labor early and report lower birth weights as well. <\/span><\/p>\n

Certain cravings that are common in pregnancy — like for sweets — can affect mom\u2019s oral health, too. Stomach acids that appear due to morning sickness may also cause damage to the tooth enamel. Not only is it completely safe to visit the dentist during pregnancy, but not doing so could potentially present serious problems.
